History
Opened 1829, Eastern State pioneered Pennsylvania-system solitary confinement in a radial plan by John Haviland. Al Capone’s cell is a famous interpretive stop. The prison closed in 1971 and is preserved as a stabilized ruin and museum of criminal justice history.
Ghost stories and paranormal claims
Labeled lore. Treat the following as longstanding reports and tour-script stories unless a primary source is cited.
Among America’s most famous “haunted prisons,” with decades of visitor reports: voices, shadowy figures, and cellblock unease. The site’s educational mission is history; paranormal reputation is enormous but should not overwrite the solitary-confinement story.
Field notes
Hours, fees, and access rules change — always double-check the official site or managing agency before you travel. Be a good guest: no trespass, no damage, no removal of objects, and no after-hours entry where barred. Daylight visits are the responsible baseline; paid evening programs only when the operator offers them.
